Both good points. For example, if I had known Agent Kristin didn't like anything about a "lottery" in it, I could have deleted that out of the query letter because the thrust of the story really isn't about a lottery - just the device to allow the character to buy her expensive childhood home in LA - the story develops from there.

You've got a point there, but wouldn't it be nice to get ANY helpful feedback without even having to send a query in? That's all I'm looking for. I want the agent to say, "No, we're not looking for this sort of thing" or "This sounds promising." I'm sure you can read between the words, but at this point of the game, any response is great response. I've never done a live pitch before and can't imagine being able to do it without fainting, lol. Thanks for the feedback, Lynn...makes sense!

I did a couple personal pitches at the ASJA meeting in April. Three out of the four agents really loved the pitch, but then when I sent the requested partials in, I got confusing replies. One even said she was too booked and not looking for new clients! Then why did she go to the pitch session?

Take these things with a grain of salt. Just because they might like a one-sentence pitch does not mean they will go any further. I much prefer the normal method of submitting a killer query letter.
